Was there ever an official explanation for the penalty shot call? I wonder if the referee thought Ristolainen threw his stick instead of having it knocked out of his hands by Marchand.

that's what i'm thinking...no excuse, however, for not awarding McGinn a penalty shot

The ending was unfortunate but there's still a lot of positives to pull from last night.

I don't think either of them should have been a penalty shot to be honest.

that's pretty much the way they've been calling it all season...don't you think?

Maybe someone like Stripes can correct me, but I remember hearing and reading on multiple occasions that the "litmus test" if you will, for a penalty shot is whether or not the impeded player originally had two strides or more on the offender. It's not in the official rulebook but it's the guide they use. If that's still true, then no, I don't think it is inconsistent with the way they have been calling all season. McGinn didn't look like he had that to me. Whereas with Ristolainen, throwing the stick is automatic.

I was of the opinion that they were using something like "clear path to the goaltender"...

on the risto penalty...were it not a penalty shot, what do you think the call would have been?...no slash, no trip, no holding, imo

edit: Risto didn't throw his stick, marchand actually flicked it out of his hands

He did pull his left arm around him at the last second.

And like I said, I wonder if the penalty was throwing the stick, which is automatic. It didn't happen that way, but if the referee thought he did, then he had to call it a penalty shot.

I hear you on the stick thing...but I looked at the risto thing quite a few times...looks like he pushed marchand with his right then pushed him again with his left...didn't see him grab marchand (or perhaps I just missed it)

I was at a bar last night so my memory could be foggy, but the one close up angle right along the goal line looked like he may have wrapped him up at the very last second. I haven't seen that angle since.

You're quite welcome. We've been going over to NOTL, stocking up on wine by the case.

Thank you for shopping in Ontario . Ontario actually has quite a few world class wineries now . Our Ice wines are now world acclaimed and are a massive export for Canada.

I was very impressed with the Sabres play last night . I had to turn off the Leafs game very early as the Sens were throttling them . Thank god for Rogers NHL Centre Ice package.

Why are my posts disappearing ? I am not attacking anyone or being vile or offensive . The Sabres have always been one of my favorite teams besides the Leafs and I enjoy talking to most Sabre fans. I find the majority of Sabre fans very intelligent and civil.

Don't understand why your fans are so against that trade . A late first is not much to give up for a quality goalie and the other asset you got.

I used to think that the Sabres scoring woes were due to lack of talent and execution but I think now that coaching (or lack thereof) may be a big problem too.

For the first 2 1/2 periods Boston had a blanket over Buffalo. 5 on 5 zone entries, neutral zone play, PP set up, point positioning, etc. Buffalo couldn't get anything going. The team just can't score unless they get a lucky bounce. An odd man rush ? Never ! All they could do was dump and chase all night. The power play was an embarrassment.

How come all the teams that Buffalo plays against always seem to have a guy at either point to corral the puck when it's thrown around the boards ? Buffalo never has anyone there.

Scott Arniel was the last coach we had that had a CLUE how to run a power play. Stats are overrated. Our Powerplay is supposedly like 7th in the league yet I think when they score a Powerplay goal it's by accident.

Thank you. I feel better.
